Staff Testimonials
Mallory Krauss, PTABy teaching the Timeless Living Fall Prevention program, I feel like I am able to change at least one person’s life every day so they do not become a fall statistic. Seeing the smiles on the participants’ faces and hearing how this program has changed their lives makes this the best job in the world. I want to help bring this program to more people so we can continue to make a difference, stop older adults from falling, and decrease the statistics. I know we are changing lives through this program.

Joe Speckhart, PTAI chose to become a PTA because I wanted to provide therapeutic care in order to help others and connect with my local community. I’m a 2016 graduate of the TCC PTA program. I’ve worked primarily outpatient ortho since graduation and most of my patients have been elderly, post-operative joint patients. As a retired veteran, I enjoy working with older patients, especially retired service members.

I was introduced to the Timeless Living program in June of 2021 when I donated my mother’s wheelchair to the PTA program. My mother had recently passed away. Dr. Basinger listened patiently as I described my family’s two-year journey after my mother fell and broke her hip. Having an elderly family member get injured after a fall is a life changing event for everyone involved. Mom did great with therapy after her partial hip replacement and we were encouraged at how her eating improved and how much stronger she got. Unfortunately, she suffered a stroke because we did not understand that her blood thinning medicine needed to be adjusted based on her body weight. So, the last year of her life Mom became less mobile as the post-stroke vascular dementia got progressively worse. Mom had six kids and all of us kicked in to help her but it still wasn’t enough. Eventually we had to hire caregivers to assist us. Towards the end of her life, Mom was bed bound and needed 24 hour care for all activities of daily living. We were fortunate to have the resources to keep her at home and be with her through her final journey. I was so grateful for everything I learned as a PTA because it helped me advocate for her and coordinate all of her care. Most importantly, my training afforded me the opportunity to participate in her physical therapy and assistive care. As a primary caregiver, I’ve seen how elderly family members need an advocate and a tremendous amount of help after injury sustained from a fall. As a PTA, I’ve seen the tremendous benefits physical therapy provides to individuals recovering after surgery and injury. I’ve learned the best healthcare tool we can give to patients is education because knowledge empowers individuals to become independent. But the one thing I hadn’t seen until after my mother passed was a comprehensive, therapy related program focused on fall prevention. Lots of places have “balance programs” and we provide education to patients after they fall and are injured. Yet, it is so very apparent to me that an ounce of fall prevention is worth so much more than months of physical therapy, patient education, and caregiving required after a fall. So this brings me to that day in June of 2021 when I donated my mom’s wheelchair. Dr. Basinger shared with me the comprehensive fall prevention program she and her PTA students had put together. She shared the vision of how this was going to be provided for free. Then she invited me to see first hand how the program worked. I remember thinking how my journey over the previous two years led me to the right place. Of course, I wanted to be a part of this! In an instant, the idea behind Timeless Living became my new personal mission: Help prevent just one person from falling and help prevent just one family from having to go through what my family experienced. It’s now the summer of 2022 and I’ve had the privilege of team teaching two sessions of Timeless Living and this opportunity has brought so much joy to my life. I am fortunate to work with outstanding therapists who really have a heart to help others. Many Timeless Living clients report having fallen at least once in the previous 6 months so they are very motivated to attend a fall prevention class. Of course, the Timeless Living team is very motivated to teach fall prevention so the energy during our time together with clients is quite positive. But the best part of Timeless Living is the interaction with so many wonderful people who share their experiences with others and laugh along the way. Without a doubt, I am encouraged by their strength and resilience. I enjoy being a part of their life, even if it’s just for a few hours a week. There is great intrinsic value in helping others to help themselves. As a PTA participating in Timeless Living, I have seen how patient education makes a positive change in the lives of our clients. The program has made a difference in my personal and professional life as well. When people ask me what I do as a PTA, my response is immediate: I work for a non-profit that teaches a program called Timeless Living. We provide free fall prevention education for seniors. It’s the best job I’ve ever had! |
